Knowing my fascination with natural soundscapes, a student recommended CS’s work to me, and they were so right—I love it!! What surprises me the most is the lightness. To evoke the oceans and the creatures who dwell there, I would expect feelings of weight and darkness; but instead one floats, hearing whalesong and dolphin clicks transformed to birdsong. Even the benthic depths have a toe-tapping, funky levity. As above, so below, and inside.

Lovely exploration of how birdsong connects us to specific places, times of day, and ourselves—and of course how birds have inspired lovely music, from Mozart to CS and beyond. I also appreciate that rather than dwelling on the sorrow of the many bird voices that are being silenced by human greed and ignorance, Cosmo instead focuses here on the joy listening to birds can bring us—which ought to inspire us to care more about and for them.
